Who Approved the Sony PSP “White is Coming” Ad?
Sony seemingly has a bad track record with questionable adverts.
In 2006 the gaming company decided to release the PSP in a new color – ceramic white, an addition to the existing black colored PSPs. No issues there.
Where the big issue did arrive however, was how the new white PSP was being promoted.
It was quite racist to say the least.
The infamous billboard advert depicted an assertive and dominating white woman, clutching and subduing a black woman. The heightened color contrasts only serves to make matters worse, with the white model being super white, and the black model being super black. The tagline, “White is Coming” didn’t help their cause either.
Sony maintained that they weren’t trying to be racist, and while that may not have been their main intention, it is still horribly insensitive. Thankfully, the media backlash was loud and Sony eventually pulled the ads.
Good riddance.
